Are you one of those people who has a lot of projects going at all times? One of my people, perhaps? Who can't just be satisfied with One Big Interesting Thing for a long period of time? I love working with creative business owners to promote their online content using Squarespace. As a result, doing this kind of work as a freelancer has generated the bulk of my income for more than ten years. If you know me personally, you get what kind of record that is. This web work remains my main "job" and it’s work I get to do from home or wherever I happen to be when it comes time to work... with incredible, interesting people I get to choose to say yes to when collaboration comes knocking. Fortunate girl indeed. At the same time, making my own "stuff" whether with my hands or using a computer has also been an ever-present reality alongside the website projects. When time permitted. This year, I've "made time permit" much more than in the last few years.
Today I bring this up because after making a big deal about announcing that I have been designing so much jewelry this year, and that an online shop would shortly follow, you heard… crickets!
The thing about pushing yourself to announce that you're about to start go down a brand new avenue (an avenue that may or may not loop back on a 10-year-old-journey and breathe new life into it,) is that sometimes your muse will take that as a sign to throw a monkey wrench into your plans. To be clear: the jewelry hasn't gone anywhere. In fact, the ideas for more creative jewelry pieces I can design haven’t seemed to let up much at all. But instead of getting started on them This Very Minute If At All Possible, Pretty Please May I, I’ve made notes when needed, and kept working on something else. Which is the something else responsible for the sound of those crickets on my website.
So Then What Else Am I Doing When I'm NOT Collaborating On Websites?
The image at the top of this page is a collage that shows you a wholly different kind of creative work that I do. These snippets are pretty reflective of a kind of artistic expression I’ve been exploring fairly regularly for the past 6-8 years. All of those snippets - which are only a drop in the bucket of The Whole - are my own pieces of digital artwork. But these designs have never seen the light of day.
When I realized the online jewelry shop needed to wait a bit longer, even, it wasn’t because I suddenly didn’t want to design jewelry anymore but it was, instead, because I realized the only way I could free up the part of my brain I need to manage not only some funky jewelry designs but also juggle the administrative details needed to market what I’ve been putting together was to let some of these digital designs come to fruition. And so that’s what I’ve worked on for the past few weeks. And just as any good ADHD Queen knows, I’ve worked on it tirelessly. Much to the confusion, I suspect, of My Greatest Love here at home. After all, he's had a front row seat to All That Is Not Linear But Must Be Done The Way It Must Be Done By A Nonexistent Rule Book He'll Never Get His Hands On... for well over two years now. Patient man, that.
The last couple of days have allowed me to move this set of projects over a significant hump and I’ve reached a point that requires even more focus and work and tenacity before I can reach the finish line on a couple of aspects.
I know, I know… it’s all very cryptic. But I decided a few of you might be curious and so I wanted to give you a sneak peek. You’ll be seeing the images I’ve shared at the top of this page again. They will show up in a variety of ways that could make you say, “Aha! That’s what she was talking about!” Actually what I hope is that I find a great way to not only Do The Thing I’m Not Telling You About Just Yet But Will Be Telling You About Quite Soon but also work some of these designs into some jewelry. What a hoot THAT would be! And since I discovered the joy of using resin earlier this year, and combining it with other materials, including paper, it’s most possible that you WILL see these designs in some of my jewelry before too long.
For now, I just wanted to quiet the crickets and say hello. And let you know that 2016 may well be the most exciting year of all on the Melody Creates Things front. And I cannot wait to tell you ALL about it soon, and pull all these loose threads together in that magnificent tapestry that lives in my brain.
Happy Autumn, ya’ll! Hope it’s as interesting for you over there as it is for me, over here!
