Where to next, in the evolution of BMW's new fabric car?

From WIRED, this afternoon:

So even from the comments, it's clear that the list of reasons this cloth-covered, shape-shifting car by BMW is more impractical than at first glance. Sure. We get it. I just can't help but wonder what follows this? And if they actually did build it 6 years ago - what's already happening in its wake?

Innovation doesn't always take us down the practical path. Forays into even ludicrous realms, seems to me, has to be an option along the way to being open to unimagined possibility. Wonder if we ever will drive cars with non-metallic, malleable shells?
