Grammar first, campaign trails later...okay?

Yesterday morning "in the country," while watching The Princess (now 5) stir the pancake batter that would eventually become our breakfast, her mom and I talked politics a bit. Occasionally our chef looked up as if mildly curious about something one of us had declared, then returned to her work without comment. Finally I asked her, "When grownups discuss politics, do you know what they're talking about?" Unconcerned, she looked at me, responded, "No!" with a little shrug, and continued stirring. I thought the matter was closed, then she looked up again. "But I know what punctuation is! You have a question mark, and a period, and an exclamation mark!"

Out of the mouths of babes. Talk about telling everyone what's really important. I'm a grown up and I still don't understand how the whole process really works.

I'm learning more and more about the process, but I'm far from "getting it" and why "it" works the way it does. (And why we don't change a few things that would make it make more sense to my own little brain.) The Princess, though? She's full of good insight...
