Ever curious about the origins of phrases?
Melody |
Tuesday, 2 August, 2005 at 8:49 AM I just found my new favorite site of the hour. The Phrase Finder offers all sorts of answers to questions you never got the answers to...or never even knew to ask!
I just learned the origin of the title of one of my favorite books, Hemingway's A Moveable Feast, for example. Excellent!
Here are some interesting ones:
- For ever and a day
- Bad hair day
- Burning the midnight oil -
- Butter wouldn't melt in her mouth
- Run amuk
- Have a nice day
- Head over heels
- We are not amused
- Neither here nor there
- Shake a leg
As a lover of words, I'm always looking for sites like these. They boast over 2000 entries in a well alphabetized list. Take a look!
