The change I've most fought for years...
Monday, 1 December, 2008 at 2:07 AM
Not only is change inevitable, some of us seem to actually crave it regularly. Except, that is, for the changes we fight tooth and nail to keep from happening. The change I'm about to tell you about us usually avoided in this blog, like that plague "they're" always talking about. Because making such public assertions can backfire when you're as prone to moments of fickleness, as yours truly is. Never mind that. Today I'm feeling bold. Long-time readers will surely respond with: "Well it's about time!"
It's coming up on time to split my website apart in a way I've been fighting for years.
There, I said it.
While this "common cold" had me practically useless to anybody for over a week now, what didn't suffer was my ability to contemplate and ponder and consider... things. Among those things? This website. See, it's driven by a personal blog. Always has been. But as an on-again-off-again freelancer, I've also kept this blog - and this site - highly intertwined with my career. I've written here for so many years now, that it always seemed too difficult to imagine separating the personal and the professional. I mean, what would I do about all the traffic I take for granted, if I moved my professional efforts elsewhere? Could I recreate and duplicate the happy little pockets of success I've built? Which is to say, more clearly: Would Potential Clients Continue To Be Able To Find Me As Easily? Well, it occurs to me now that not only do I have the skills and tools to succeed with such a split, but I'm on the cusp of finally taking the leap. The risky but pretty necessary leap.
Having recently admitted to being burned out on designing jewelry, and wanting to spend more and more time focused on web-based projects, it seems more important than ever that I make this happen.
Today I'm optimistic; no fear in sight. Things will hopefully just get better. I want to keep talking to you, here, about creativity and life and discoveries and challenges. And I also want to spend more time writing to you about the local things that matter to me, such as tonight's Inaugural DMP Photo Exhibit at Thai Pan in Downtown Greensboro, and the Greensboro Farmer's Curb Market and the Center for Creative Aging, North Carolina, to quickly name a few.
The first day of the last month of the year seemed the perfect day to jump. I needed to put this out there. We'll see how it goes. Lots of decisions standing between here and then, but saying it seems a first step. Especially saying it publicly...
Hope your Happy December First Monday is starting out with as much promise as my own seems to be!
