Success: Sleeping through the night surprise

That's right folks. Thousands are blogging about last night's DNC and the historic speech of Barack Obama and I? I'm going to sit here and write for just a couple of minutes about how happy I am the dog who's in my care did not wake up until 6:45am. First, I tend to keep political discussions for in-person conversations and out of my blog, in spite of the importance I place on these matters. It's just not that kind of blog. Plus? I'd say it's been covered. You don't need to come to melodywatson.com to find out "How'd he do?"

But how'd Daisy do? Well, babies, she did just great! A month ago when I agreed to stay at my friend's house this weekend and care for her aging dog, she admitted that unlike last time I was here, several months ago, her pooch is waking up throughout the night to go out. "It's almost like having a baby again," she told me. Uh. Okay.

I love my friend. She's one of the most kind and generous people I know. Literally. Imagine the person who coordinates the ladies in her church to make meals for a woman who can't leave her home often anymore. Imagine the person who cooked for people at a local homeless shelter again and again. Imagine a woman who made sure even the less-nice co-workers knew they were special on their birthday when we used to work together. That's my friend. Of course I love to be in her home and care for her dog!

So I'm here, and last night when I was tucking myself in just before midnight, I took a deep breath and thought, "It's only a quick trip downstairs when she barks...I can do this." Already I'd been left the exciting note that Daisy is only waking once in the night, at around 4:30, and then again around 6:30.

Never mind I did naturally wake at 4:30 - the anticipation was just too much for my sleeping mind, I guess. I did it again at 5:30. Then at 6:30. When the freakish thought crossed my sleepy mind: "What if she's dead? It can't be. That would NOT happen on my watch! Surely!!!" And I tossed and turned for 15 minutes, trying to sleep, wondering when - or if - the dog would bark.

Never was I so strangely happy to hear a dog bark as I was at 6:45. Never mind I'm still sleepy. OH so sleepy this morning. But at least the dog's still alive! 3 nights to go...
