My Granddaddy, clowning around
Friday, 12 February, 2010 at 10:07 AM
This picture makes me happier than any I've seen in a long time. (Click for a larger view.) In part, because it's of my much-loved Granddaddy who lives several hundred miles away, which means I don't see him often. And in part because it was sent by my cousin from my aunt's phone. No biggie, on an ordinary day: relatives laugh together. But since my cousin Jim's death, every day brings struggles. My aunt says it's not day-by-day but rather that they sometimes get by minute-by-minute.
So seeing evidence of laughter, and goofing off, and even this tiniest sense of normalcy just made me take a deep breath, say another prayer - this one of gratitude - and stop my work to pick up the phone. Y'know, to see what I was missing. ;) And just as I suspected, he was in a fine mood. Clowning around, messin' with people, doing his thing.
I wish I could introduce every one of you to my Granddaddy. He'd make your day too...
Oh. And he would probably also want me to mention: if you have a Grandmother or kindly neighbor who's single and interested in some company, he's 90, still has a fabulous sense of humor, likes his coffee fresh and hot, and would probably like to meet her. Just sayin...

Your Granddaddy is really a Grand Guy? How do I know? He's MY Daddy!
Love,
Dad
I wonder what he would say if he knew that you posted this on your blog? Just wondering. It is good to see him goofing off--coffee in hand.
Dad, he is pretty great, eh? Mom, I told him before I posted it. I think he liked it...
What a cutie, if I were single and 90 he'd be my cup of tea.
